‘Mentor’—this is one word that is very often used in corporate settings. But what does it truly mean, and where does it come from?
The concept of mentoring has deep roots in history. It originates from Greek mythology, where the term ‘mentor’ was first introduced. When Odysseus left to fight in the Trojan War (around the 12th century BCE, according to legend), he entrusted his kingdom and the care of his son, Telemachus, to his trusted friend Mentor. As recounted in Homer’s Odyssey (circa 8th century BCE), Mentor became a teacher, protector, and guide for the young prince.
Fast forward to the present day, mentoring has become a cornerstone of professional growth. Recognizing its importance, most Fortune 500 companies now have structured mentoring programs. In today’s corporate world, mentors are not just advisors but catalysts for growth, offering their experience and wisdom to help others navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and achieve long-term success.
However, mentoring is different from coaching. While both aim to support development, their approaches differ significantly. Mentoring is relationship-based and focuses on holistic, long-term growth. It fosters trust and allows mentees to learn from their mentor’s life lessons. Coaching, on the other hand, is short-term focussed, transactional and task-specific.
Both are valuable, but mentoring has a deeper impact, often shaping careers and lives in profound ways. As John C. Crosby once said, “Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.”
My First Mentor
This was exactly what I found when I met my first mentor.
When I began my career in a leading IT company in India, the HR department assigned me a mentor. It was the early 2000s, and the IT industry was booming. Overseas assignments (mostly in the US and Europe) were many and highly lucrative.Like many others, I was excited about the opportunity but also unsure of what lay ahead.
My mentor was an experienced and thoughtful individual who believed in the importance of regular interactions. In our very first meeting, he emphasized that we should meet regularly, even if there wasn’t a formal agenda. His approach was simple—build trust over time.
Nine months into my job, HR approached me with a long-term overseas assignment. They presented it as a great opportunity, but I wasn’t sure if it aligned with my goals. At the time, I wasn’t even aware that declining an overseas assignment was an option.
I turned to my mentor for guidance. His advice was clear and impactful:
- Don’t go for the place; go for the project.
- It’s okay to say no if the project doesn’t fit your career roadmap.
- Never agree to something you aren’t fully committed to.
Following his advice, I declined that assignment and three others that didn’t align with my aspirations. Eventually, I was offered a development project in Taiwan. Although the location wasn’t highly sought after at the time, the project itself was a turning point in my career.
The role required managing the entire project lifecycle—from requirements gathering to deployment—in one of the most in-demand technologies of that era. It was challenging but rewarding, shaping my career trajectory with a role change and consecutive promotions.
Looking back, I realize how pivotal my mentor’s advice was. It wasn’t just about saying no or yes; it was about making intentional decisions that aligned with my long-term goals.
Conclusion:
Mentors play a vital role in shaping our careers and personal growth. They offer invaluable insights and perspectives that often lead to life-changing decisions. Unlike transactional relationships, mentoring fosters trust and allows mentees to benefit deeply from their mentor’s experiences.
It’s great to have ambition and the right skills, but ensuring that we make the right career decisions is equally important. One poorly thought-out decision can jeopardize a career. If you need a growth catalyst: Find Your Mentor.
